Although there were three tries in 2012, Xavier Planty told me that all the botrytis-affected grapes were harvested in the three days period of October 29, 30 and 31, after the north-easterly wind.

Nevertheless, his Guiraud has a sense of “confidence” on the nose that bodes well for the future – crisp, honeyed fruit with white peach and quince developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a viscous, effervescent entry.

It has good depth and freshness, although like others it dips at the finish where it is missing a little viscosity and persistency. There are only 600 cases produced in this year – a tiny crop.

Vinene fra Sauternes er uden sammenligning de fineste søde vine i verden. Der findes masser af andre gode søde i resten af verden men ingen kan måle sig med den kvalitet som den lille kommune i Bordeaux formår. Sauternes laves af Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillion samt Muscadelle. Druerne angribes af skimmelsvampen Botrytis cinerea som delvist tørre druerne ind til en kraftig saft med høj sukker. Plukkearbejdet foregår normalt i mange etaper da druerne angribes individuelt. Dette samt det lave høstudbytte er med til at øge omkostningerne er derved priserne på Sauternes. På toppen af hierarkiet Sidder blandt andre Château d’Yquem, Guiraud, Climens, Rieussec, Suduiraut.
